(1) In the Tournament's first sudden-death playoff, he won the 1979 Masters in his first appearance, the third player to do so (Horton Smith 1934, Gene Sarazen 1935). Topped Ed Sneed and Tom Watson with a birdie on the second extra hole. Defeated Greg Norman in a playoff for the 1984 US Open title. Runner-up in 1981 PGA. Finished third in the 1994 British Open. Member, 1979, 1983, 1985 Ryder Cup Teams. A winner of 10 PGA TOUR titles. Winner of the 2004 MasterCard Championship on the Champions Tour and the 2002 Senior PGA Championship. The Recipient of the 1985 Bob Jones Award presented by the USGA for distinguished sportsmanship in golf. Has played in 29 Masters.
