Go ahead and pinch Johnson Wagner. He can’t stop doing it, either.
Wagner became a freshly minted Masters invitee Sunday with his victory at the Shell Houston Open. He was still giddy with adrenaline despite only a few hours sleep, following a quickly arranged plane flight to Augusta and housing accommodations for the week.
Somewhere on the highways between here and Houston, Wagner’s recreation vehicle is being driven to Augusta by someone he doesn’t know.
“It’s just been crazy. I haven’t really had a second to sit back and thing about what’s happened,” Wagner said.
Wagner didn’t fall asleep until 4:30 a.m. and woke up after dreaming about taking part in the practice round tradition of skipping tee shots across the water at the par-3 16th hole.
Wagner drilled one shot into the bank. Another effort cleared the water and rolled just on the front of the green.
This won’t be Wagner’s first time playing Augusta National. His great uncle is a member, and Wagner was a guest here a few years ago and stayed in the Eisenhower Cabin.
“I didn’t sleep that night either,” Wagner said. “It’s just unbelievable to be here right now. “I can’t state it enough. This is a lifelong dream.”
