There is a lot of stuff you can’t see from your living room. And I don’t care what you’re watching it on. A 4-inch Sony Watchman with telescoping antenna or that new 62-inch Bravia HD TV with Direct TV’s Masters Mix.
You still don’t get a feel for the elevations. Or the contours. Or the distance. Or what’s its like to be standing around the 18th green and hear the distant roars and groans from about seven different holes in the valleys below you.
And OK, yeah, I’ll go all gooey on you: The beauty. The vistas. Which are incredible. I know you think you know but you don’t know, man! Because every time the camera shows a simply gorgeous unparalleled shot, what you are unaware of is that immediately to the left and to the right and above and below that shot is… ANOTHER gorgeous unparalleled shot.
The guys in the booth must be suffering from severe sensory overdose with the embarrassment of riches concerning shot possibilities. Like a kid in a candy store who won a Nickelodeon contest and gets to eat all he wants in a 20-hour time period over four days.
So with the cut coming up tomorrow, help a guy out here. What’s your favorite camera shot of Augusta National? The one you want CBS to linger on. What do you see that you want to see more of? Amen Corner? The sunsets? Jim Nantz?
For me, it’s the turtles sunning themselves on the 16th green. I guess I’m just a turtle kind of a guy. You probably knew that.
