Moving Day
Saturday, April 12, 2008
By Will Durst

Will Durst

They call Saturday at the Masters “Moving Day,” because of the seismic changes that usually occur in the leader board. Apparently, “Earthquake Day,” “See-Saw Day,” “Roller Coaster Day” and “Intestinal Twisty Day” didn’t make the glossary cut. But this year, there are a lot of reasons that Moving Day applies.

First off, it’s a testament to all the great golfers who are now free to pack up and leave the Central Savannah River Area. Eleven former champions have cleaned out their lockers and left the building, including Freddie Couples who ends his streak tied with Gary Player for most consecutive weekends played. 23.

Today is also Moving Day because that’s an apt description of the activities we spectators are scheduled to engage in, if the weather forecast holds up. The very ungood (not a word, I know) weather forecast. We will be moving to the Golf Shop to buy umbrellas or moving under trees for moisture relief or if it gets real ugly (meaning lightning) we will be moving out of Augusta National altogether. Until the system moves on.

It’s also Moving Day because this is when the younger players remaining in contention often experience the butterflies in the belly start moving like they’ve been disturbed by a phalanx of cement trucks spinning at Mach V. You think Trevor Immelman and Brandt Snedeker are a lock to walk up 18 to massive applause on Sunday? We don’t have to look back far to illustrate my point. Let’s just go back to the 2007 Masters Tournament shall we, and check out one of the leaders entering the weekend last year. Brett Wetterich. Hmm. I wonder what happened to him? T-37.

My point exactly.
