Signature Sunday
Sunday, April 13, 2008
By Will Durst

Will Durst

It’s Signature Sunday and only one thing is certain: somebody is destined to write a story today that will last throughout the ages. They will fashion it in their mind’s eye and write it out in longhand as we watch. And they will autograph it and make it their own and there will be no other quite like it:

We just don’t know who. Yet.

We don’t even know in which form this drama will be presented to us. Is it a harrowing adventure novel or a single line in a haiku? A heartwarming tale of overcoming insurmountable adversity or the initial entry in a thrilling year-long, four-part serial?

And remember, the narrative doesn’t necessarily have to have a happy ending. Sometimes it’s a modern-day tragedy, isn’t that right, Mr. Norman?

It could be an effortless thing of beauty and then again, it might turn out to be a painstaking process that is harder to watch than a Japanese instructional video on advanced calculus.

What is guaranteed is there will be plenty of plot twists to distract our epic hero. The wind. The leader board. The patrons. CBS and their 4,870 cameras. Amen Corner. The sight of Tom Brokaw wandering around researching his ’09 Golf Digest Masters Preview. Rae’s Creek. Mentally figuring out how much the taxes are on the $1.35 million first place prize money. The lingering suspicion that Jeev Mikha Singh and Phil Mickleson are actually cousins who pronounce and spell their last names differently. Who can finish in the top 16 and gain an automatic qualification for next year’s Masters?

And the best part is that today is no longer about questions, it's about answers. Stay tuned.
